HEALTH ALERTMISSISSIPPI STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
The Mississippi State Department of Health has seen an increase in the number of cases of Shigella over the last few weeks in the six coastal counties. There have been 103 cases to date this year in Harrison, Hancock, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, and George Counties, compared to four cases as of October 23 of last year. Of the 103 cases, 71 are in Harrison County and 10 cases are in Hancock County.
Shigella is a bacteria that causes fever and diarrhea. Shigella is passed from person to person when there is poor hand washing after a bowel movement or diaper change. Infection can then occur by hand to mouth contact or by eating food prepared by workers with contaminated hands.
You can prevent your child from getting Shigella. Hand washing with soap and water is all it takes. Everyone should wash their hands after using the restroom, changing a diaper, and before preparing or eating meals. Small children should be taught how to wash their hands, too.
If your child has symptoms of this illness, contact your physician. Any child having diarrhea should be kept home until they are free of symptoms for 24 hours.
For more facts on Shigella or for a downloadable copy of the hand washing handout, visit our website at www.HealthyMS.com/shigella. Pediculosis; commonly known as head lice are parasitic insects on humans. Generally head lice infestation is most frequent in children ages 3-10 and their families. Head lice are spread with direct head-to-head contact with an infected person or by sharing personal items such as a hat, hairbrush, comb, wig or towel. The most common symptom of head lice is itching. Head lice infestations are usually treated with medicated shampoos or cream rinses. Nit combs can be used to remove lice and nits from the hair. Laundering clothes using high heat can eliminate lice.

Lice Facts
-
Head lice attach eggs next to scalp on hair follicles.
-
Head lice eggs will usually hatch in 8-11 days. Eggs more than 1/4" from scalp have already hatched and are of no concern.
-
Lice cannot survive long away from their host. Head lice may survive for ten days but three days away from the host will normally kill them.
-
Heat kills eggs and adults. Clothing washed in 140 degree water for 20 minutes will kill both.
-
Storage of items for 30 days will ensure that no eggs or lice survive.
