WHHS VISION

VISION STATEMENT

All students will be performing at proficient
or  above by  the end of each school year beginning with 2011-2012.
NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Here at West Harrison High School, we foster a caring and respectful environment both academically and socially. The faculty and staff take a genuine interest in and concern for students’ success.

We are most proud of the new traditions that are being established to the new campus and community. All of our WHHS leaders have made significant progress bringing forth this supportive culture by employing basic but proven principles: maintaining an open-door policy, embedding high expectations, and being highly visible on campus and in the community. The decisions of the school’s leadership are made for the best interest of all students. WHHS takes into account input from the community, students, teachers, and parents. We have developed a positive rapport with students in order to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Our faculty and staff have also taken the time and effort to know and understand the young adults whose futures they are molding. This culture of true caring forms the basis for the success of every other effort, program, and resource and illustrates the high value placed on teaching and learning. It forms the basis for success in any of WHHS students’ future endeavors.

West Harrison High School is dedicated to ensuring that all students who enter and exit the doors are college or career ready, have the desire to be lifelong learners, and can be active and productive members of our community. Our academic focus is facilitated by the instructional leaders and collaborative work environment that we have embedded here on campus. We believe that parental involvement, communication, academic responsibility, and high expectations are all characteristics that are conducive to the success of students. We welcome the community to become involved as we continue to grow and develop more traditions at our school and share in the experience of watching our students display their gifts, talents, knowledge, and growth as they move ahead in their lives.

On behalf of WHHS, we are totally committed to our students’ education and well-being.

West Harrison High School STAR Student and STAR Teacher Chosen

Erik Michael Johnson has been named West Harrison High School STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student for 2011-2012.

The son of Michael and Sharon Johnson of Gulfport is a member of National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. As captain of the soccer team, Johnson led scoring and was named to the All-District and Sun Herald teams. He also lettered in baseball and tennis.

Johnson plans to attend Jones County Junior College in Ellisville before transferring to Mississippi State University to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering. Jones County Junior College has awarded Johnson academic and soccer scholarships.

STAR students are chosen on the basis of scholastic excellence by comparing students' American College Test scores and academic averages. Each STAR student designates a STAR Teacher, the classroom teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement. Johnson has selected Advanced Placement English teacher Janice Stewart as his STAR Teacher.

Stewart has been teaching for 23 years, and this is her second selection as STAR Teacher. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master of Education degree from William Carey University. Stewart sponsors the senior class, National Honor Society, and is the debate coach.

Johnson and Stewart will be honored by the Mississippi Economic council's M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation on April 12, 2012 at the Jackson Convention Center in downtown Jackson.

KYLE EAST CHOSEN AS 2011 TERRIFIC TEEN OF THE YEAR

Kyle East, a senior at West Harrison High School, was named 2011 Terrific Teen of the Year by South Mississippi Living Magazine through a program sponsored by the Bacot-McCarty Foundation and the IP Casino Resort and Spa. The honor included a feature in South Mississippi Living Magazine and a $1,500 scholarship. The magazine named an outstanding student each month in 2011 from schools in Harrison, Hancock, and Jackson counties and selected Kyle as the overall winner from those honorees.

East is a member of the WHHS varsity baseball and soccer teams and serves as vice president of the senior class Student Council. He has participated in the Debate Team, Spanish Honor Society, and Beta Club, and served on Homecoming Court and Prom Court. He will graduate this May with high honors and will pursue a degree in engineering.

East, who is the son of Keith and Debbie East of Saucier, was recognized at South Mississippi Living's second annual Terrific Teen banquet held recently at the IP Casino Resort and Spa.

Nineteen students at West Harrison High School are being recognized for scoring in the top 20 percent of students nationwide in the recent US Department of the Treasury's National Financial Capability Challenge competition.

The National Financial Capability Challenge is an awards program designed to increase the financial knowledge and capability of high school-aged youth across the United States. It gives educators incentives to teach the basics of personal finance to their students by rewarding students, educators, schools, and states for their participation and their successes. Educators and top-scoring students receive award certificates, and schools and states with the highest participation rates earn special distinction.

The Challenge was taken by more than 80,000 high school students between March 12 and April 13, 2012. Participants included students in rural areas, suburbs, and inner cities across the country, and in Department of Defense schools around the world.

WHHS students who scored in the top 20 percent were Daniel Barlow, Michael Bateman, Chrystal Christie, Samara Cole, Ronald Dougherty, Anthony Downs (who had a perfect score), Dustin Eisman, Alana Faulk, Michael Felker, Thomas Harrison, Tristan Harrison, Dylan Larson, Thomas Martin, James Musgrove, Kayla Porter, Rebecca Reygaert, Hillary Rimanich, Colby Roessling, and Michael Schramm.

Congratulations to these students!

WHHS REPORT CARD

Harrison County School District

(Part A: No Child Left Behind Act of 2001)

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires school districts to publish report cards containing certain information. The required information falls into three general areas: school improvement, teacher qualifications, and test data. A school that fails to make adequate yearly progress in achievement must be identified for school improvement. The report must contain information about the professional qualifications of teachers in core academic subject areas [English, reading, language arts, science, mathematics, foreign languages, arts, civics and government, economics, history and geography]. Highly qualified teachers are those who satisfied the NCLB criteria during the school year. The report must also contain achievement data for specific subgroups, two-year achievement trends and student participation rates.

Please contact the principal of your child's school if you have questions about this report.
