Erik Michael Johnson has been named West Harrison High School STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student for 2011-2012.

The son of Michael and Sharon Johnson of Gulfport is a member of National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. As captain of the soccer team, Johnson led scoring and was named to the All-District and Sun Herald teams. He also lettered in baseball and tennis.
Johnson plans to attend Jones County Junior College in Ellisville before transferring to Mississippi State University to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering. Jones County Junior College has awarded Johnson academic and soccer scholarships.
STAR students are chosen on the basis of scholastic excellence by comparing students' American College Test scores and academic averages. Each STAR student designates a STAR Teacher, the classroom teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement. Johnson has selected Advanced Placement English teacher Janice Stewart as his STAR Teacher.
Stewart has been teaching for 23 years, and this is her second selection as STAR Teacher. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master of Education degree from William Carey University. Stewart sponsors the senior class, National Honor Society, and is the debate coach.

Nineteen students at West Harrison High School are being recognized for scoring in the top 20 percent of students nationwide in the recent US Department of the Treasury's National Financial Capability Challenge competition.
The National Financial Capability Challenge is an awards program designed to increase the financial knowledge and capability of high school-aged youth across the United States. It gives educators incentives to teach the basics of personal finance to their students by rewarding students, educators, schools, and states for their participation and their successes. Educators and top-scoring students receive award certificates, and schools and states with the highest participation rates earn special distinction.
The Challenge was taken by more than 80,000 high school students between March 12 and April 13, 2012. Participants included students in rural areas, suburbs, and inner cities across the country, and in Department of Defense schools around the world.
WHHS students who scored in the top 20 percent were Daniel Barlow, Michael Bateman, Chrystal Christie, Samara Cole, Ronald Dougherty, Anthony Downs (who had a perfect score), Dustin Eisman, Alana Faulk, Michael Felker, Thomas Harrison, Tristan Harrison, Dylan Larson, Thomas Martin, James Musgrove, Kayla Porter, Rebecca Reygaert, Hillary Rimanich, Colby Roessling, and Michael Schramm.
Congratulations to these students!
