American Heart Association Honors HCSD Heart Heroes

(HARRISON COUNTY, MS) The American Heart Association recognized some Heart Heroes in the Harrison County School District during Monday night's Harrison County School Board meeting.

On September 3, 2019, the Harrison County School District kicked-off its first ever “Heart Challenge”.  Superintendent Roy Gill asked every school in the district, along with central office staff, to help raise money for the American Heart Association.

Each school formed its own team and named a team captain. The schools then came up with creative ways to boost donations.  For instance, they designed and sold t-shirts, hosted Hat and Jeans Day, sold paper hearts, held friendly competitions, and asked for on-line support from the public.

Along with the district-wide fundraising campaign, hundreds of students, teachers and staff also showed up in force at Jones Park on September 28 to participate in the Gulf Coast Heart Walk.  During the event, Mr. Gill presented the American Heart Association with a check for $4,903.31.  The money came from school fundraisers.

Several schools continued to raise money up until the morning of the Heart Walk.  During Monday's school board meeting, Liz Young, Youth Market Director for the Mississippi Chapter of the American Heart Association, was presented with another check for $1,222.64.

With the schools’ contributions, along with PTA fundraisers and on-line donations, Harrison County School District was able to raise a total of $11,360, surpassing its $10,000 goal! Ms. Young was very appreciative of the district's support.  She handed out these following awards to recognize some of the top schools and team captains:
