About Child Nutrition

The Child Nutrition Department of the Harrison County School District is here to serve healthy, nutritious, quality meals to our students. We want the students to enjoy our meals and our service. The dining room should be a pleasant place to come with happy employees and happy students. It should be a place to come together and be nourished while at the same time experiencing a social time with their friends at school. We strive to be a quality place to dine together.

We have, at this time, 160 employees in 21 school cafeterias, central office and food service maintenance. We serve approximately 9500 lunches, 4700 breakfasts, and 400 snacks daily. We also have a Summer Program where we serve approximately 1250 lunches daily to children throughout the months of June and July.

Based on the Obesity Epidemic in our country, we are gearing up on healthy choices in the school cafeterias. We will be offering more fruit/vegetable choices and less fried foods. Many foods that have been fried in the past will now be baked. We will still be serving French Fries; however, we will be reducing the number of times a week fries will be served. We are going to put more concentration on Nutrition Education in the curriculum and become a pro-active school district in helping our students become healthier and more physically active. Administrators, parents, teachers and students are invited to check out some of the Nutrition Links below for great ideas on becoming physically fit, nutritionally fit and mentally fit!! There is also a web site called Kid's Health which offers much information on various illnesses affecting your child's health.

With the increase in food costs due to gas prices and other natural disasters, the School Board voted May 9, 2011 to increase the price for breakfast and lunch for students beginning 2011-2012 school year.

LUNCH K-12:    $2.25
REDUCED LUNCH K-12:    .40
FACULTY LUNCH:    $3.00

GUEST LUNCH:    $3.25

BREAKFAST K-12:    $1.25
REDUCED BREAKFAST K-12:    .30
FACULTY BREAKFAST:    $2.00

Charging School Meals Not Allowed

fd00115_.jpg

Harrison County School District has just adopted a School Board Policy pertaining to charged meals in the cafeteria. Charging school meals is not allowed. If lunchroom charges do occur, after $15.00 worth of incurred charges, your child at that time will be provided, out of courtesy, a peanut butter/jelly sandwich with milk.

You will be notified of any cafeteria charges incurred for your children.

Thank you,

Wanda k. Salley

Child Nutrition Director
