About School Safety & Safe Schools

The Harrison County School District realizes that if the staff and students don’t feel safe in school, learning will be difficult at best. The safe school department advises the superintendent and principals regarding safety and security practices and programs throughout the district. The safe schools director works hand in hand with the Harrison County Sheriff Department and the Gulfport Police Department, on insuring that the schools are as safe as they can be through the COPS in schools program. The director also conducts regular staff meeting training sessions defining their important roles in maintaining a school as safe as it can be. This department also is responsible for the fingerprinting and drug testing of all new hire personnel to be used for background checks. Background checks are conducted through the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Department of Human Services Child Abuse division and the FBI in Virginia.

Current Projects

The supervisor is working with the Mississippi State Department of Education, Safe and Orderly Schools to provide a course to district staff members called “Violent Confrontation Avoidance”. This course is designed to teach teachers new and effective ways to recognize, deescalate, and evade a potential crisis situation involving another student or parent.

The supervisor is currently working with 17 school districts serving approximately 180 schools, public and non-public to upgrade and improve their Emergency Response and Crisis Plans. Funding for this project provided by grants from the United States Department of Education.

A portion of these grants involve evaluating the district security assessments of each campus. Criteria such as visitor control efficiency, and numerous other security items are evaluated in an effort to keep our employees and students as safe as we can make them.

To all Harrison County School District Employees

The staff at Medical Analysis Wellness Clinic has noticed that within the past couple of months there have been patients who did not show up for their scheduled appointments and did not call to cancel, which are considered "No-Shows". We encourage our patients to call the clinic to cancel appointments as soon as he/she is aware the appointment is no longer needed.

We get many calls throughout the day requesting same-day appointments. We cannot always accommodate these requests due to lack of availability. However, if we were aware of cancellations ahead of time we could actually schedule other patients in these slots. Always call first to see if the clinic can see you same day. Walk-ins have been taken on an availability basis and this time of year; availability is slim.

Patients who are considered "No-Shows" only hinder their co-workers from receiving prompt medical care. So please be considerate to your fellow co-workers and call the clinic as soon as you are aware that a scheduled appointment needs to be cancelled or rescheduled.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Kelly Stevison, CFNP
