Harrison County School District offers three types of alternative education. We offer Behavior Modification Classes for grades Kindergarten through 6th grade and placement at Harrison County Alternative School for grades seven through twelve. We also offer a GED Program.
Our Behavior Modification Classes are held at two different locations, Bel-Aire Elementary School and Lyman Elementary School. Students are referred to the Behavior Modification Program by the Harrison County School District Disciplinary Committee or by the Behavior Modification Classroom Committee on a space available basis. Students are taught appropriate behavior though varied and positive instructional approaches.
Harrison County Alternative School receives students by one of three methods:
- direct referral by the superintendent's office
- via the Disciplinary Committee
- via the Director of Special Education as an IEP placement.
Students attend a minimum of 45 days. The school offers an alternative to expulsion and provides a curriculum, which includes conflict resolution and drug education. The Director of Student Services office approves all referrals. Nothing is sent directly to the Alternative School, nor are students to be sent to the school without direct confirmation from the school. This is necessary in order to meeet state requirements and allow Mrs. Moody time to set up an initial interview appointment with the student and parents.
Harrison County conducts GED classes in two locations :
- D'Iberville High School
- Harrison County Alternative School
Our GED program is open to students who are at least 16 years of age, at least two grade levels behind or have acquired less than four Carnegie units, and have taken every opportunity to participate in coursework leading to a regular high school diploma. Students who have been referred to the Alternative Education program for disciplinary reasons are not eligible. This program offers an alternative way for students to obtain a high school diploma and helps to decrease our dropout rate. We offer students the opportunity to take the TABE test to determine if they are eligible for the program prior to submitting a recommendation form.
