Current Projects

The Jump Start Program will begin August 8th and conclude on September 20th for students K-8th grade.
The After School Tutoring Program is designed to meet the academic needs of students who are "at-risk" or at least one grade level behind.
These programs are funded by the Mississippi State Department of Education. The goals of the program are to improve academic performance in Reading, Math, and Language Arts.

School Nurses

Harrison County School District employs 10 nurses. Two nurses work for the Special Education Department, one is employed at the Harrison County Child Development Center, and one is employed at D'Iberville Elementary School with funds from the Anti-Tobacco Grant. The remainder of the nurses spends one to three days in each of their schools in much the same manner as the social workers/interventionists. They can be reached for school medical emergencies through district-provided pagers. Memorial Hospital provides nurses and in-school clinics for most of our middle and high schools.

Drug-Education and Anti-Tobacco Programs

The purpose of the drug education and anti-tobacco programs is to provide a drug-free/tobacco-free education and environment to grades K-12. The goals are to increase the awareness and understanding of the school community of the importance and value of drug prevention and the dangers of their use; to decrease youth access to drugs; to integrate and sustain drug prevention education in all school activities; and to promote accessible, affordable and effective cessation services in the school community. The goals of the anti-tobacco program also seek to increase school personnel awareness of the benefits of cessation (tobacco); and to reduce the number of children exposed to environmental tobacco smoke during school sponsored activities or events. The Program also promotes drug education in all schools within the district.

EXCUSE FOR ABSENCES

Harrison County School District Attendance Policy

The school must receive an excuse within two school days after an absence, or it will automatically be considered unexcused.

About Student Services

The Student Services Department is responsible for overseeing the District's Discipline policies and procedures. The Department of Student Services encompasses the following: School Nurses, School Counselors, Social Workers, three Interventionist Specialists, Records Clerks, School Secretaries, Alternative Education, Behavior Modification, Transitional Program, GED Program, After School Programs, and Drop Out Prevention. In addition, the Department also oversees several school programs to meet the needs of students throughout the district including the Learn & Serve Program, McKinney Homeless Education, Drug Education and Anti-Tobacco Programs, and Practical Parenting Partnership.

Learn & Serve

The purpose of the Harrison County School District Learn and Serve America Program is to enable students to apply the acquired skills taught in the classroom with serving the community. It is our goal that all participants acquire skills and form partnerships with people of diverse backgrounds as they gain an insight on the impact they can make as contributing members of the community. This will help us reach the ultimate goal of serving the community while increasing academic skills.

Practical Parenting Partnerships

Practical Parenting Partnerships is primarily a preventive program that reaches out to families. It encourages seeking solutions to todays issues and provides a supportive environment of sharing and interaction. Each school holds five meetings per year, and all staff members are encouraged to attend. Parental attendance is mandatory for those parents with students enrolled in the Behavior Modification Program, Harrison County Alternative School, and Child Abuse After-school Tutoring Program.

Step Programs

Harrison County participates in two types of STEP Programs, Homeless and Child Abuse. Both programs seek to implement high quality after school tutorial programs for at-risk children in grades K-9.

The goals of the Homeless Program are

  • to improve academic performance in Reading, Math, and Language Arts
  • to decrease the number of suspensions, expulsions, and dropout rate with the schools
  • to increase parental support and involvement through conferences and the parent education program

The Child Abuse Program covers students in grades 7-9. It requires that a minimum of one parent per each child participating in the program attend one parenting skill session in the school.

Social Workers & Interventionists

The school district employes  social workers and interventionists through the district with Title 1 funds and Drug Education funds. The students are referred when classroom interventions fail.

Alternative Education

Harrison County School District offers three types of alternative education. We offer Behavior Modification Classes for grades Kindergarten through 6th grade and placement at Harrison County Alternative School for grades seven through twelve. We also offer a GED Program.

Our Behavior Modification Classes are held at two different locations, Bel-Aire Elementary School and Lyman Elementary School. Students are referred to the Behavior Modification Program by the Harrison County School District Disciplinary Committee or by the Behavior Modification Classroom Committee on a space available basis. Students are taught appropriate behavior though varied and positive instructional approaches.

Harrison County Alternative School receives students by one of three methods:

  • direct referral by the superintendent's office
  • via the Disciplinary Committee
  • via the Director of Special Education as an IEP placement.

Students attend a minimum of 45 days. The school offers an alternative to expulsion and provides a curriculum, which includes conflict resolution and drug education. The Director of Student Services office approves all referrals. Nothing is sent directly to the Alternative School, nor are students to be sent to the school without direct confirmation from the school. This is necessary in order to meeet state requirements and allow Mrs. Moody time to set up an initial interview appointment with the student and parents.

Harrison County conducts GED classes in two locations :

  • D'Iberville High School
  • Harrison County Alternative School

Our GED program is open to students who are at least 16 years of age, at least two grade levels behind or have acquired less than four Carnegie units, and have taken every opportunity to participate in coursework leading to a regular high school diploma. Students who have been referred to the Alternative Education program for disciplinary reasons are not eligible. This program offers an alternative way for students to obtain a high school diploma and helps to decrease our dropout rate. We offer students the opportunity to take the TABE test to determine if they are eligible for the program prior to submitting a recommendation form.
