2018-19 HCSD Teacher of the Year

Meet 2018-19 HCSD Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Kathryn Farmer received a big surprise during the Harrison County School Board meeting Monday night, when she was named Harrison County School District’s 2018-19 Teacher of the Year.

Kathryn Farmer

Mrs. Farmer is a fourth grade math and science teacher at West Wortham Elementary School.  She has been teaching for 12 years, and her love for the District runs deep. Mrs. Farmer believes every child deserves a chance to get an education that will prepare them for a successful future.  Her goal is to create an atmosphere that not only enables students to grow, but also encourages a love of learning.  One way is to give students instant feedback and reflection on their assignments.

Mrs. Farmer also understands the importance of parental involvement in a child’s education.  She strives daily to get parents engaged by using technology to keep them updated on classroom activities.  She is actively involved in the school’s PTSA, because she wants to promote family involvement and build relationships with the parents and students.

It is with great pride that I get to represent our district as the 2018-2019 District Teacher of the year. I always challenge myself to be the best for each student and coworker I come in contact with,” said Farmer.

Mrs. Farmer is well known among her colleagues as a team player.  Teachers can always count on her to assist with anything they need.  Mrs. Farmer was chosen West Wortham’s Parent of the Year in 2016 for her willingness to always give a hand in projects that benefit students and families.

One of Mrs. Farmer's greatest accomplishments was being selected to serve on the Math Council for the state of Mississippi.  She was chosen to help motivate and coordinate K-4 math teachers across the district through staff development.  She is working with other team members from across the state to review and report on upcoming curriculum in order to impact the lives of students across the Harrison County School District.

Mrs. Farmer is a former graduate of the Harrison County School District, and she wanted to return to the district to teach.  She is proud of her former students who have expressed a love for math.  In 2018, West Wortham’s 4th grade math students placed first in the district, with over 20-percent growth!  She wants her students to reach their full potential with the right guidance, classroom procedures, and opportunities to succeed.

Mrs. Farmer and her husband, Rodney Farmer, are the proud parents of two West Wortham students – Hailey and Hayden.
