HCSD Launches Count Me In Attendance Campaign

HCSD Launches "Count Me In" Attendance Campaign

The Harrison County School District is probably the first school district on the Mississippi Coast to launch a district wide campaign aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism.  We strongly believe that regular school attendance can help boost academic achievement, reduce the dropout rate, improve behavior, and keep students on track for graduation and reaching their career goals.  The campaign supports the Mississippi Department of Education’s efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism in schools across the state.

As part of the “Count Me In” campaign, we are challenging every school in the Harrison County School District to raise their attendance rates by two-percent this school year.  Our schools cannot do this alone.  They need support from our community, which includes parents, businesses, churches, and non-profit organizations.

Several community partners have already provided some great incentives to support the "Count Me In" campaign.   Here are just some of our partners:

  • Hancock-Whitney Bank donated a Saints Jr. Captain prize package, which includes four tickets to a New Orleans Saints home game.
  • Academy Sports (in partnership with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department) donated 30 youth bicycles and safety helmets.
  • Harrah’s Gulf Coast and United Way of South Mississippi donated ten Ipod Nanos and Apple gift cards.
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market (Gulfport) donated five big kids bicycles.
  • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publishing company donated Christmas-themed children’s books, and is sending a popular storybook character to visit our schools.
  • Lucky Langston Financial Solutions of Gulfport donated two large bicycles and three $10 Walmart gift cards.
  • Cinemark Gulfport donated ten movie passes.
  • Altitude Trampoline Park in Gulfport donated eight passes to the facility.
  • Papa John’s Pizza in Gulfport donated 1,000 free large one-topping pizza coupons.
  • Chick-Fil-A donated ten gift cards for free meals.
  • HCSD Athletic Department donated six athletic passes.

HCSD will host two special programs to award these prizes to students who have achieved perfect attendance.  We will recognize a group of students who have been selected by their principals at a presentation on Monday, December 17.

HCSD will also announce the first, second and third place schools, along with the star students and teachers, during a finale celebration in April of 2019. While these prizes provide great incentives for our students to come to school every day, the "Count Me In" campaign is really about showing children that we care about their education and their success.
