Winning a state championship means so much to West Harrison! The growth that our squad has shown has been incredible over the past two years. They had never known what it felt like to be the best one at a competition. Last year, they were so close to winning and it really motivated them to go for the state title this year,” said West Harrison High Cheer Coach Heather Nance.

Harrison Central, on the other hand, has won the state cheerleading championship a whopping 21 times!

“At the beginning of the school year, goals were set and priority was given to each goal. Winning the Mississippi state championship was our top goal. This was our 21st state championship! Winning the state championship has become expected from our squad, which adds extra stress and expectations.  We have a legacy that we try to continue every year so that we don’t disappoint those who preceded us,” said Dianne Davis Denley, Harrison Central High Cheer Coach.

D’Iberville High is also no stranger to winning state titles in cheerleading. This makes the fourth state title for the Warriors.

DHS State Cheer Champs

“The D’Iberville High School cheerleaders are ecstatic over their win in the 5A-6A All Girl Game Day division!” said D’Iberville High Cheerleading Coach Kristy Roberts. “The DHS cheerleaders excelled in the game day division, because it was a direct reflection of their favorite part of their season - GAME DAY! They performed a three-minute routine that consisted of a band chant, situational sideline, cheer, and traditional fight song. Through this routine, they had an opportunity to showcase their athletic ability and skill set while recreating the Warrior Nation’s game day atmosphere.”

Mrs. Roberts says the team was truly motivated to win.

“The girls suffered a tough loss last year after receiving 2nd place and have been driven all season to win a state title. Countless hours of practice prepared them for the tough competition. The thrill of the win, combined with achieving a team goal, has brought this team together to share a bond that can never be broken. However, the celebration only lasted a short time, because they are now working on making their performance even stronger for the National Cheerleading Championships to be held in Orlando, FL. in February,” said Roberts.

The coaches credit the success of all three teams to their efforts to create a spirit of community this year. Harrison Central’s Cheer Coach Diane Davis Denley started the coed squad at Harrison Central. She coached Kristi Roberts, who is now the coach for D’Iberville High. Kristi Roberts coached Heather Serpas, who is now the cheer coach at West Harrison. West Harrison’s choreographer, Jayk Stewart, also cheered under Kristi Roberts.

HCSC Cheer Coaches

“I believe it is a huge accomplishment, not only for the team, but for the school as well, with this squad being the first to ever win a state championship at West Harrison. We are also very excited to have our sister schools, Harrison Central and D'Iberville, win state titles. We came together as a united front this year, and all of the cheerleaders and coaches have been very supportive of one another. We created a great culture and community that we hope to keep for many years,” said Nance.

“I am very excited about all three Harrison County schools winning their respective categories as State Champions! This has been an opportunity for our students to bond with each other through the support of their individual coaches. All three coaches and two assistant coaches were all products of Harrison County School District's cheer program. That’s a very unique situation. There has been a lot of chatter on social media, places of worship, and other community meeting places with excitement about Harrison County cheerleaders.  Pretty exciting!” said Denley.

DHS State Dance Champs

D'Iberville High had another reason to celebrate. The D’Iberville High School Competition Dance Team captured the State Title in the small varsity Game Day Division at the 2019 MHSAA State Dance Competition. The team has worked tirelessly since July to earn the title of State Champs. They will head to the NDA National Dance Competition in March of 2020.

Meanwhile, all three cheerleading squads will be heading to the national cheer competition in Orlando, Fla, in February of 2020.

Congratulations to all our cheerleaders, dancers, coaches, and supporters on this amazing accomplishment! We wish them all the best of luck at the national level.
