HCSD Wins Governor’s Partnership Award

(HARRISON COUNTY, MS) Harrison County School District won a major award at the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education (MAPE) Conference in Hattiesburg. On March 4, 2020, MAPE presented HCSD with the Governor’s Partnership Award for the district’s “Count Me In” Attendance Matters Campaign for 2018-19! The award celebrates the District’s successful partnership with over 25 community partners who joined forces to combat chronic absenteeism.

When the campaign kicked off in the fall of 2018, HCSD Superintendent Roy Gill challenged each school to raise their attendance rates by at least two percent. HCSD hosted a recognition program midway through the campaign to recognize students who achieved perfect attendance in December of 2018.

Attendance Matters Poster

The Count Me In initiative produced some impressive results, even though some schools did not meet Harrison County Schools Superintendent Roy Gill’s high goal of achieving two percent above Average Daily Attendance (ADA) for 2017-18. Despite a statewide winter flu epidemic that struck our schools hard in January and February, data showed seven schools saw a rise in their average daily attendance. The increases ranged from 0.16 to 1.26 percent.  The rest of the schools reported minimal decreases in their ADA, ranging from 0.01 to 0.91 percent.

HCSD truly appreciates our partners in education. It really takes all of us to raise the attendance rates and help our students succeed.
