Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Grant Expands in HCSD

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (August 24, 2021) - Harrison County School District is excited to announce the expansion of a federal program that provides free, healthy fruits and vegetables to our elementary students! This week, the Harrison County School Board approved a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant for the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program. The following schools in HCSD will receive FFVP Grants for the 2021-2022 school year:

  • Bel-Aire Elementary
  • Crossroads Elementary
  • D’Iberville Elementary
  • Harrison Central Elementary
  • Lizana Elementary
  • Lyman Elementary
  • Orange Grove Elementary
  • Pineville Elementary
  • River Oaks Elementary
  • Saucier Elementary
  • Three Rivers Elementary
  • Woolmarket Elementary

Each day, students at those schools will receive either packaged fresh fruit or vegetables. The program is free for students, in addition to other food/snack programs that are currently on campus. The program starts Monday, September 20, 2021, and will continue through the entire school year.

The FFVP Grant provides healthier snack choices in high-need elementary schools and introduces students to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have the opportunity to try:

HCSD is very grateful to the USDA for awarding us this competitive grant totaling just under $400,000. In five short years, the program in HCSD has grown from two schools to 12 schools.
