West Harrison High Wins FAFSA Excellence Award

West Harrison High Wins State FAFSA Excellence Award

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (November 11, 2021) – Congratulations to West Harrison High for winning the 2020 School of Excellence Award for FAFSA completion! Only three high schools in Mississippi receive this honor every year. WHHS was selected based on the school's participation and commitment to the FAFSA Completion Challenge. This is the first time that WHHS has been recognized for this achievement.

The award announcement came from College Countdown Mississippi, a statewide initiative of a partnership of organizations such as Institutions of Higher Learning, Mississippi Community College Board, Mississippi Department of Education, and Get2College. The goal of the campaign is to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college at an Application Day Event, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and recognize their post-secondary plans at College Signing Days.

In its congratulatory letter to WHHS, College Countdown MS stated: “Thank you for your demonstrated commitment to student success and for serving as an exemplary model for College Countdown Mississippi. Many students find the college-going process stressful, overwhelming, or confusing and don’t know how to ask for help. Because of high schools like West Harrison High, students receive the support they need to break down the steps for college and are set on a path of success. We know that this was an especially challenging year for students, and we are grateful to educators like you who creatively found ways to support students as they navigated the complex applications process.”

Over 120 high schools across the state have participated in College Countdown Mississippi since its creation in 2013.

“Thank you for being a committed partner to our efforts and for helping the class of 2021 apply, pay, and celebrate their post-secondary plans,” said College Countdown MS.

The Harrison County School District is very proud of WHHS and school counselors, Ms. Jamie Lord and Mrs. Emily Thomas, for their dedication in helping our graduating seniors navigate through the complex college application process, especially in completing their FAFSA. The district appreciates all that these school counselors have done and continue to do to help our students succeed!

As another highlight, Mrs. Thomas was featured in the September newsletter of Get2College, and her interview is also showcased on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhX1shtBzvU
