HCSD Rates High on MS 3rd Grade Reading Test

HCSD Rates High on MS 3rd Grade Reading Assessment

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (June 6, 2022) – The Mississippi Department of Education recently announced results for the 3rd-grade reading assessment for the 2021-22 school year, and Harrison County School District made the top-ten list of school districts with the highest passing rates in the state.

Overall, 88.2% of 3rd graders in HCSD received a passing score last month on the initial administration of the test. That rate is higher than the state average of 73.9%. HCSD is ranked 2nd on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is tied for 9th place out of nearly 140 school districts in the state.

Congratulations to the following schools in HCSD for achieving a passing rate of 95-percent or higher on the state assessment:

• Lizana Elementary

• North Woolmarket Elementary

• Saucier Elementary

• West Wortham Elementary

We would also like to commend the following schools in HCSD for earning a passing rate of over 90-percent:

• D’Iberville Elementary (91.7%)

• Pineville Elementary (92.6%)

• Three Rivers Elementary (92.3%)

• Woolmarket Elementary (92.7%)

The passing rate presents a preliminary snapshot of 3rd graders’ literacy proficiency as schools emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time Mississippi 3rd graders took the assessment in a normal school year was April 2019.

"We are very proud of our teachers, administrators, parents, and students for their hard work in preparing for this very important test, despite challenges caused by the pandemic. This accomplishment was made possible through the dedicated efforts of our teachers and staff, starting at the kindergarten level. We will continue to focus on highly-effective strategies to help ensure our 3rd graders develop strong reading skills needed to be successful in 4th grade and beyond," said HCSD Superintendent Mitchell King.

In accordance with the Literacy-Based Promotion Act (LBPA), 3rd graders who do not pass the initial test are given up to two attempts to retest. All Mississippi 3rd graders must pass a reading assessment to qualify for promotion to 4th grade. Students who did not pass the reading assessment on their first attempt were retested in May. The second retest will take place on June 21st at Harrison Central Elementary. Final district-level pass rates will be published in the fall.
