HCSD Teacher Wins $2K Grant for Escape Room Project

(Harrison County, MS) September 26, 2022) – English teacher Bethany Seal of West Harrison High School is being honored as the only teacher in Mississippi to win the 2022 Voya Unsung Heroes Award. Seal teaches English 2 Accelerated, English 1 Accelerated, English 2, and Dual Credit Comp 2 at WHHS. She is also the school’s English Department Chair.

Seal received a $2,000 prize for her innovative project “Cross-Curricular Literature". This unique lesson involves asking students to select their favorite literary text and then design, build, and run an escape room based on their analysis of the text. Students will demonstrate their understanding of literary analysis and showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills by working collaboratively with one another in small groups.

In its announcement letter to Seal, Voya stated: “Through your application, one of more than hundreds that we received this year, you demonstrated initiative and leadership, and you serve as an important role model for our students. As one of only 50 award winners nationally, you’re part of an elite group of educators that have introduced an innovative teaching method that engages students in a unique way and helps them foster an appreciation for learning that will last a lifetime.”

HCSD is very proud of Ms. Seal and would like to thank her for always going above and beyond for her students.
