
(HARRISON COUNTY, MS) November 18, 2022 – West Harrison High received special recognition this morning from the Mississippi Legislature for earning the distinction of being the #1 ranked high school in Mississippi. The school hosted its first Academic Pep Rally to honor the students, teachers, administrators, and staff for earning its first-place ranking. School board members, district leaders, and Harrison County dignitaries were also in attendance.
During the school-wide program, State Representative Jay McKnight read a proclamation from the state legislature honoring West Harrison High for its incredible achievement. Dr. Marla Davis, Associate Superintendent, Academic Liaison with the MDE Office of Academic Education, also congratulated all the students, teachers, and staff for their exemplary performance. HCSD Superintendent Mitchell King expressed his pride in WHHS for ranking first place out of over 450 public high schools in Mississippi.
West Harrison High’s top state ranking is based on MDE’s accountability grades for the 2021-22 school year. During the pep rally, students who received a perfect score on state tests in Biology I, Algebra I, English II, and U.S. History were recognized. Teachers with outstanding rankings in their subject areas were also honored.
Today’s program included a tug-of-war, balloon relay, spirit competition, music, and performances by the WHHS national cheerleading champs. Students were treated to more fun activities after the event. Congratulations to everyone at West Harrison High!
