West Harrison Teacher Wins $5K Robotics Grant

West Harrison Middle Teacher Wins $5K Robotics Grant

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (July 18, 2022) – Mr. Brenden Phillips, a robotics teacher at West Harrison Middle School, just received one of the biggest robotics grants from Sparklight. During Monday night’s Harrison County School Board meeting, Sparklight representatives presented a $5,000 check to Mr. Phillips to support the school’s robotics program.

Mr. Phillips plans to use the grant to purchase ten VEX IQ Robots for this robotics class and school club “Team Surge”. He thanked Sparklight for awarding him the large grant, which will impact over 110 WHMS students.

“I am very excited! This grant will help modernize the classroom and make us more competitive. This is just the start we needed. I’m a Harrison Central High graduate and I wanted to come back to HCSD and grow the robotics program,” said Mr. Phillips.

WHMS has the only middle school robotics class in the district at this time. In the program’s inaugural year last year, Team Surge won 2nd place in the Mississippi FIRST Tech Challenge!

We wish to congratulate Mr. Phillips for being the recipient of the wonderful grant. We also want to thank Felicha Haley, Jessica Robinson, Greg McGuffee, and Blake Holland from Sparklight for joining us on Monday for the special presentation. We truly appreciate the ongoing support from our business partners.
