Harrison Central High Selected to Launch AP Cybersecurity Program
(August 13, 2025) – The Harrison County School District is incredibly proud to announce that Harrison Central High School has been chosen as one of only three high schools in Mississippi to launch two pilot courses – Advanced Placement Cybersecurity and AP Networking!
This innovative program will give our students a unique opportunity to gain cutting-edge skills in cybersecurity, networking, and digital defense—preparing them for the high-demand tech careers of the future. This marks a significant milestone in the school’s history, and HCSD is excited to lead the way in bringing advanced computer science education to our students and community.
"Launching the AP Cybersecurity and AP Networking program at HCHS opens doors for our students to master the skills that will shape the future—it’s a chance for our Red Rebels to step into tomorrow, build real-world expertise, and become leaders in protecting and shaping the digital world," said Harrison Central High Principal Rachel Burt.
According to the Mississippi Department of Education, the process started in 2024, when the College Board invited Mississippi schools to apply to participate in the pilot program for both AP Career Kickstart courses. Harrison Central and two other high schools in Rankin County were selected. The schools took part in summer institutes and will receive ongoing support during this school year. This implementation will provide a model for other schools when AP Cybersecurity and AP Networking become available statewide in 2026-27.
"This program is putting our students at HCHS on the cutting edge of the cybersecurity world, laying the foundation for a career in an industry that will only increase in job opportunities as our world exponentially adds technology and internet capabilities," said Lee Crump, who is teaching both courses at Harrison Central.
AP Cybersecurity helps students develop the technical and professional skills they need to prepare for opportunities in the cybersecurity field. AP Networking trains students in the field and aligns closely with standard first-year collegiate introductory networking courses. Participation and proficiency in these courses will allow students to earn college credit and employer-endorsed credentials.
As trailblazers in this state-wide initiative, our HCHS students will be among the first in Mississippi to gain advanced skills in safeguarding digital systems and building the networks of tomorrow.
